Practical Jokes in AutoCAD

This is a true and funny story.  Have you ever played a practical joke on somebody that was using AutoCAD?  Like, turn off the PICKFIRST variable?  Or press CTRL+0 as you were casually walking by their workstation?  How about altering their PGP file?  Last weekend, while I was working on my next training video, I scripted and recorded a section on how to edit the PGP file in AutoCAD.  The PGP file defines the command aliases for AutoCAD.  It lets everyone know that if you type L on the command line, that AutoCAD will start the LINE command.  In the video I suggested that you play a trick on somebody and change it so that every time they type L, the Plot Manager opens!  Today, working on my videos again, I kept typing L and the plot manager opens!  It took me three tries until I remembered what i did, to myself!  that might have been the first time I played an AutoCAD trick on myself!

Happy CADDING!

  1. I was testing 2000i when it came out. One of the new features was allowing to have someone on a different computer control over your AutoCAD session. I got the other CAD tech, who could easily hear and see us, setup with control of my AutoCAD, and called one of the engineers over to show her the best new feature, "Voice commands". When I would say "draw circle here" the other CAD tech would draw the circle in the place I pointed. It took a bit to get the engineer to believe I was controlling AutoCAD with my voice. So I had her try it out, and she completely fell for it. Wasn't until she walked over to the other CAD tech's desk to ask if she knew about the "feature" and saw all same lines and circles on her screen that she figured it out.

  2. Use the command "UNDEFINE" to have loads if fun... you can always uae "REDEFINE" unless of course you F up and undefine redefine... this works well to get "that guy" in line.
